If
you are considering the purchase of a safe, you probably have
a lot of
questions about how to buy a safe that meets your
needs. But at most retail stores that sell safes, the selection
is limited and security education is poor. At Saylor
Safe & Lock, you will find a large selection of safes
for your home or business records, jewelry, guns, cash, and other
valuables and keepsakes. And we can advise you on the best place to
locate a safe in your home, business, auto, RV, etc. If we do not stock
the safe that you need, we will find it for you or
have it custom built. Here
is a list of different types of safes that are generally used to fit a
special need. For detailed information on specific models within these safe types,
please call us at 281-469-8027. Fire
Safes, Containers and Files
-
Date
Safes are uniquely constructed for storage of computer diskettes, CD's,
photo negatives, microfiche and microfilm, all of which would be damaged
in a standard fire safe. These safes should have the U. L.
(Underwriters Laboratory) label for 125 to 150 degrees.
-
Data
Containers are similar to Data safes, but they are smaller and
considerably more affordable. They usually have to be placed
inside of another fire rated safe or fire rated filing cabinet.
-
Fire
Safes should have the U. L. 350 degree label for one or two hours.
This type of safe is not built for burglary protection, but some
are built better than others. Avoid imports.
-
Fire
Containers are similar to Fire Safes bearing the same U. L. ratings, but
they are smaller and cost much less. Because their burglary
protection is very low, these should not be used for storage of valuables.
-
Fire
Safes with RSC Label are constructed differently and are more
suitable for storage of valuables up to a point. RSC is a U.
L. label for Residential Security Containers having heavier plate
steel materials rather than sheet metal construction. These
safes normally incorporate a few other upgrades to offer protection
against a more sophisticated attack. These are often
referred to as BF (burglary / fire) safes.
-
Fire
Safes with TL Label are heavy safes offering a high degree of
burglary protection. Like other fire safes, these come in a
variety of sizes for home and business use. These are
often referred to a High Security Fire safes or TL - 15 or TL - 30 Composite
safes. This is where you store cash, jewelry and other
valuables with confidence.
-
Fire
Rated File Cabinets are available in many sizes and
configurations. Typically these will hold and organize much
more paper than a safe, but they are low in the burglary resistance
department. Nevertheless, every home and business should have
one for important papers, and they are ideal to hold Data safes.
In-Floor
Safes
An In-floor
safe is the natural choice for people who are building a new home,
because it is easy to have the safe installed at the same time the
concrete slab is poured. However, a safe can still be installed in
your existing home's concrete slab. It can be hidden from view and because
it is under
the slab, natural (not certified) fire protection is provided.
Firemen, flooding, and plumbing problems will fill it with water, so
keep things stored in Tupperware or baggies. There are many
sizes, shapes and levels of security to select from when purchasing an
in-floor safe.
Depository
Safes A
depository safe is the best choice for business users. This type
of safe is is often referred to as a hopper safe or drop safe. It
has a slot, drawer or rotating drum to
make deposits (checks, cash, bank bags, etc.) into a secured
compartment. A fire rating is not available for this type of safe. The double-door depository safe is popular because an employee
can drop funds into the upper compartment and use the bottom door to
acquire other funds, such as change and petty cash. Gun
Safes When
you think of a gun safe, you see a tall safe for rifles. There are
many models available from gun dealers that are not fire rated or that
do not have a fire-protection lining. We recommend that you
purchase a model that does have a fire rating. Also consider a large U. L. fire rated safe
with a long gun or hand gun interior installed. You will still have room for
paper documents and valuables. Smaller safes and containers are
available which are specifically designed for hand guns. From a
safety and liability view, we highly recommend the Amsec PB-48
pistol box for those that carry firearms or keep them nearby. Wall
Safes A
wall
safe offers concealment and is user-friendly, because it can be accessed at
a convenient height. Wall safes are available in several different
sizes and levels of security, and should be installed by a qualified
carpenter. They are great for
securing smaller items that you access frequently, but because of
their size limitation and because they are not generally fire rated, you
many consider having a second safe for your most important assets or documents.
Under-Counter Safes An
under-counter safe can provide the business owner with an additional layer of security. These
small depository boxes are usually mounted near a cash
register, and are used to store excess cash and customer checks.
They are relatively low in cost and are not intended for overnight
storage. Most have a key operated door.
Free
Standing Safes Generally
free standing safes do not provide fire protection. They are
available in a vast assortment of sizes and burglary ratings.
These safes are not as bulky as fire safes and therefore are preferred
by those more interested in higher storage capacity or better
concealment.
